Drop Through Trucks

This is a short tutorial on creating a drop through truck set up for a “normal” skateboard. The goal of this is to simply make a fun and interesting cruiser out of a spare deck that would not have seen any use otherwise. This method will require pretty small wheels and tight trucks to avoid wheel bite. If you wanted to make it into a legitimate cruiser it would be wise to make cut outs for the wheels as well.

Supplies:

Something to cut out a fairly precise pattern in the deck. I used a Dremel tool with a drill bit and cutting disc.

Sandpaper to tidy up the edges.

Pencil for tracing.

Ruler/Straightedge

Step One: Disassemble.

Take apart the trucks you plan to use.

The next few steps are there in order to trace and mark where to cut so that the truck can drop through the deck successfully.

Step Two. Mount the trucks.

Briefly mount the truck base. I just dropped the bolts in place. No need to screw them in place.

Step Three: Trace.

I traced the truck base in order to help me make sure my next lines were all straight. You want to mark where the truck base EXTENDS. Thunder trucks are great for this because it is basically a rectangle.

Step Four: Connect the Lines.

Connect the Markings.
I filled in the center rectangle. This is what we want to cut out.

Step Five: Cutting.

Use your cutting tool/drill and remove the area you previously marked. After cutting, sand any rough edges.

Step Six: The Set Up.

Insert the bolts on the bottom of the deck.
Drop the truck base through the hole. Firmly attach the nuts to the bolts.
Reassemble the truck.

Finished!

All that’s left is to put the wheels on and test it out. As previously mentioned, you’ll want small wheels and tight trucks for this exact set up. If you want to use larger cruiser wheels you’ll have to cut out the board further so that the wheels have room to move.
